And back to the regular news :)

Last month I enden with the note that I expected July to be quiet. That did not happen, but in a good way! Together with Resi van Zijl from ViZi keramiek I decided to participate in another art event: Kunstpark Woerden on September 8. And just the idea alone made my brain burst with new ideas!

I already noticed last event that small items like postcards sell pretty well. That meant I had to have more postcards made, get some proper presentation materials, and I also wanted to have some smaller items for sale. So I got a big thick sheet of plywood and had it cut into 15cm x 15cm squares. These squares are now in the process of becoming the cutest little paintings. It takes some time, there is a lot of sanding and priming involved, but I love it. The whole process relaxes me and I love working on wood!

These small paintings will make their debut at Kunstpark Woerden, so they will not be in the shop until after that. I do give some sneak peeks on social media (https://www.facebook.com/TheDoodlingDutchie/ / https://www.instagram.com/thedoodlingdutchie), so you know what is coming! (Unless they are all sold out, which would be amazing! In that case I will make more for the shop, so don't worry :))

But there was a small shop update, with a bright poison dart frog pastel and ofcourse all the new postcards.

Coming up is more small paintings!

That's it for this month!

A coworkers husband loves exotic animals and has a collection of the most amazing, brightly coloured creatures. Among them are poison dart frogs. My coworker showed me some pictures and I instantly fell in love with all the colours and variations.

It took a while before I actually featured it in my art, because I wasn't sure about the media I wanted to use. But when I got this lovely dark grey paper, the decision was easy. A bright Pop! on a dark background, it dares any hungry individual to eat it. And be very, very sorry afterwards.

Some friends of ours have a bunch of sheep. They are big and loud and incredibly curious and adventurous animals, always looking for that tastier bit of grass. And they turn out to be incredible escape artists. Their adventures always make me laugh.

I always loved ladybugs. They look so cute, wth their shiny shields and fun dots. But they are ferocious predators. A contrast I can't help but love. As a kid I believed they brought good luck and still, so many years later, they brighten my day every time I see one.

I got a set of plywood panels and the woodgrain is just so beautiful. Such a shame to paint it over completely. So now it is inhabited by this regal magpie. You can still see the wood on the side and the texture of it through the paint.

This hedgehog is part of my Woodland life series, painted with oil paint on hardwood panel, still showing that beautiful woodgrain along the edges.

It was a beautiful day. Warm and sunny, without the stinging heat that preceded today, tall green trees providing some lovely shade. The forest was quiet, no wind to rustle the leaves, and the wildlife stopped their hustling and bustling and crickets and chirps when I blundered by. Nevertheless, I felt at peace. And out of breath. It was in that moment, that I plopped myself down on a fallen tree, that I saw it.

It stared at me from the other side of the log. “Oh, hello there!” The hedgehog cocked its head, then seemed to give a tiny nod. I sighed a happy sigh and stared at the branches above my head. “So quiet isn’t it?” The hedgehog gave what I could only describe as a snort. I looked at it. “You don’t agree?” It was a rhetorical question. I didn’t expect an answer, it was a hedgehog after all. So imagine my surprise when it shook its head very deliberately.

I stared at it, mouth agape and eyes bulging. “You can understand me?” I must have looked like a fool, because it let out a delighted giggle. Then it nodded. “Can you speak too?” It nodded again. “Wow. I never met a speaking hedgehog before.” It smiled.

“So you don’t think it’s quiet?” Headshake. If it really could speak, it was a hedgehog of little words. “Are you alone here?” Another shake. It turned its head and indicated a pile of leaves at the bottom of a nearby oak. I could see some shapes move in there when I looked closely. The hedgehog turned its head back to me. “Party.” It whispered in a tiny, shy voice. “Ah.” I looked again and thought I could see a couple of faces peeking out of the leaves. “And you came in search of some alone time?” Because that was exactly the same I had done. It nodded.

It scurried out of the ferns and sat next to me. Minutes passed in silence. I don’t know how much time we spend, sitting quietly on that log, but the sun had started to set when I heard my name called out from outside the woods. I looked at the hedgehog. “I have to go.” It nodded. “It was nice meeting you.” It nodded again. It turned around to follow my noisy process back to the party I fled from. I looked back once.

It sat in the place where I left it, a tiny smile on its face. Then it lifted its paw, hopped of its perch and disappeared in the undergrowth. A small breeze brought me its parting words. It whispered around my head, happiness in the small voice. “Goodbye, my friend.”

The first thing you see is bright shapes on a black background. But then you look a bit closer and you spot the red details, the subtle flares of light. Closer again and you see the black is not black at all, but dark blues and purples and you notice the amazing structure that reflects the light in ripples.

I always loved ladybugs. They look so cute, wth their shiny shields and fun dots. But they are ferocious predators. A contrast I can't help but love. As a kid I believed they brought good luck and still, so many years later, they brighten my day every time I see one.

They come together every Tuesday. Over the years they tried other days. But the rest of the week they are busy with important ladybug business and everybody hates Mondays. So Tuesday it is.There were more of them, these little blue friends, but Bart got lost when he fell asleep behind the windshield wiper of a car and woke up in uncharted territory, and Lilly got snatched by a sparrow just last weekend.

They gossip about the boring lives of the mundane red bugs. They discuss current affairs (that delicious infestation of lice on the third rose on the left) and their health (really Sally, no one wants to know about that).

And they don't realise it, but when they are together, with all their arguing and gossiping and laughing out loud, they make magic. Just a tiny bubble, bright and blue, invisible to anyone on the inside, but a shining light for everyone else.

This little circle of friends... this is where the magic happens.
