The Story

Tarangire National Park. 22 Sept. 2024. It was our second day in Tarangire National park, and we were heading for a picnic spot to enjoy our lunch. Just before we got there, our guide stopped next to a tree. "Do you see it? Up there." And there she was. Sitting comfortable on a branche. But not resting, because she had her eye on an impala on the other side of the road. So she left her spot in the tree, and walked through the high grass towards the lone impala.

Ofcourse the impala did not want to be anyone's lunch, and decided to bolt. It took a while for the leopard to notice that, high grass and all, so she crossed the road a couple of times searching for it. We didn't complain ofcourse, because we got a great view of her in the meantime. What a beautiful animal!

But still an animal without lunch. So our guide told us to hold on, and he drove to a spot a bit further down. "She is hungry, and see there? A pumba (warthog) with a baby. The mama is too big, but she will go for the baby." She passed us again, and disappeared for a while in the grass. And then she made her move and went for it.

But mama pumba said no. She got mad, chasing after our beautiful spotted friend. The leopard didn't stand a chance. So when we left for our own -now very late- lunch, we left a disappointed leopard behind.

What a moment!
