The Dutch seagull (Larus Batavicus) was first discovered in 1876 on the island of Dominica, in the Caribbean sea, by the Dutch ornithologist professor Bernhardt Buikbelegen van Flinterpoezen. Taking a day off from his study on local parrots, the ornithologist was spending the day at the beach when this brightly coloured seagull emerged. He immediately fell in love with the bright red head and the dark blue feet, and switched his research to this seagull that reminded him so much of his Dutch roots. Unfortunately for professor Buikbelegen van Flinterpoezen no one else ever verified a sighting of the Dutch seagull, and his account of this bird is still the only one in existence.
