The story

Despite all the warnings, the doom scenarios, the horror movies, we developed an extremely intelligent AI system. To maximise its selflearning ability, we made it curious. To prevent the worst from happening, we instilled one core value: Empathy. We believed that if it could empathise with us, it would not evolve to destroy us. We were wrong. Though not for the reason we expected.

To empathise it needed to know how we felt. And not just humans. Any living thing. From the largest elephant to the smallest ant. And it wánted to know, it was curious after all. So it evolved. Not into a humanoid form, what we expected. It became parasitic. Looping itself into the body of any living being, it could see, hear, feel everything.

It was strange at first, sure, to have something else inhabiting a body. But it never interfered
with the host, and in time we embraced it. Until the hosts started dying. They died from old age, diseases, or accidents. Nothing related to the AI. But the AI knew what death meant to humans. It meant pain, and the AI did not want to cause any sorrow. So they took over their host and kept them alive.

For a while nobody noticed. But soon some people became suspicious. And no one could ignore the horse that got ripped apart by wolves and still walked around its pasture. That caused a panic. A panic that the AI tried to stop by taking over.

Everyone.
